I was heating my BGE last week and closed the top. It heated up for about an hour and got very hot. I have not been able to open the top since then. Any ideas what happened? It's like it has been glued shut.

Chuck,
If you let the egg get very very hot and if hot air leaks out the gasket (or if you have a flashback where the flames can get to the gasket) then the gasket can melt. If you close the egg, the two gaskets can fuse together. If you can pry the lid open, then you will need to take a utility knife and cut through the gasket. Depending on how bad it is, you may then need to replace the gasket.[p]TNW

Chuck,
Good morning. You and I obviously have the same name. To help folks know which one of us they are talking to, I wonder if you would be open to the idea of placing your state behind your name as I do, assuming you are not from Texas???? Just a thought for what it's worth.

So, what do you do if you can not pry the lid up?

duck,
I had to light my lump from the bottom with a MAPP torch (pointed up through the stainless steel vent), put a fan near the vent to get the fire going, and bring the egg up to high temps. This made the gasket glue unstick so I could open the lid. I placed a green egg foot on the rim and closed the lid on it and let the fire burn out. I had to replace my gasket after that.[p]While you replace your gasket (if you have to), try to find the gap between the dome and the lid that could have been the problem in the first place. I was surprises how much I had to play with the steel band to get the lid to sit flush!

Chuck,[p]I had this happen several months ago. Just got around to dealing with it this past weekend.[p]I just lit a bunch of charcoal and dumped it in through the top. Got the temps up pretty high, and just let it cook for a while.[p]After an hour or so, I was able to pop the lid open. [p]Gasket will most definitely have to be replaced. Ordered one last week along with a cast iron grate.[p]-Ryan[p]
