Need help aligning lid

Yesterday I replaced a fried gasket on my LBGE. Now, I can't seem to get the lid and the base lined up properly. Every time I tighten up the bands the lid gets pulled about 1/2 inch towards the rear. I'm afraid to use it now because I'm sure it will fry my brand new gasket as the front part of the lid is now exposed to the pit.

Is there a trick to tightening these bands to keep everything aligned? Everything sits square before I tighten it up.
