Small Egg bottom damper door question

My wife got me a small egg for our anniversary this week. When it arrived I told her that I wanted to make sure all the pieces were there and that none of the ceramics were broken. After a visual inspection I had to put it away until our anniversary which is on the 18th of October (talk about cruel). Now I not saying that I was playing with my new toy like a kid finding his Christmas presents a few days before the big event but somehow I noticed that the stainless door on the bottom draft opening slides very easily and seems to have a little slop where it would be closed for a low and slow cooks resulting in possibly to much air to enter the bottom of the egg. My large eggs door closes very tight and there is no slop. Is this normal for the small egg? If not do I just try to crimp the edges of the door guide in to make the door tighter or is there another solution?[p]John

Mine was the same way. I took a hammer and gently tapped the crimps that the door slides in to make them tighter. I helped quite a bit.[p]Toy Man

Retired RailRoader,[p]Our small seems to have a bit more "slide" also. We never did anything about it and we've never had any problem doing low and slows with it. I actually like that it moves more freely.[p]Tonia

Been using my small for about a year now...found the same thing with the door fitting very loose. Seemed tto let in a lot more air than the Large vent door. Did the same thing as Toy Man and just tapped the frame a little to make it tighter.
Seems to work fine and did allow it to cool down a little quicker.

<p />Retired RailRoader,[p]wheni i got my small, the damper door covered part of the vent so i trimmed away on it so that could get max airflow.[p][p]when i replaced the damper i discovered just a minor problem, so i had to make a new sliding door.

I also had a problem with an air gap between the damper and the ceramic. easily fixed by removing the entire damper and flatting it out a little, you will have to cut away the silicone that was used to seal it. [p]If the fixebox is too big around it may not touch the bottom and just kind of wedge itself in the egg. Grab a grinder and remove about a 1/16 around the entire top outside edge.[p]to do all of this may take a little while. especially if try to modify the damper door.HTH[p]Scott
