Cork spacer for a MM ... what happens on the inside of the dome?

I have put a cork on the outside of the MM to act as a spacer so that the temp probe doesn't penetrate the chicken I'm cooking:

That's fine however the metal contraption to hold the probe in place still sticks in quite a bit:

I'm sure that I saw a picture on the forum somewhere of a better solution for this but danged if I can find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Take that little metal clip off and never put it back on. Use it for a drip pan spacer, use it for a paper weight, etc. But never put it back on where it came from. Gravity will do its job.

put the clip into the kitchen drawer for things you never use again

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • The clip is perfect for hooking on the side of a kettle of boiling water when you are calibrating your thermometer.

You can also take off the cork and put the metal clip on the outside.
  • Are you sure your probe is far enough in to take an accurate reading? The measurement isn't take at the tip, but at a point of minuscule indentation halfway down the shaft.

I put the clip on the probe itself all the way to the gage and then put it in the Egg from outside. No need for the cork or to keep track of stuff.

I'll try with the metal clip from the outside.

@GrateEggspectations it appears to work well as it is, the temperature readings have been consistent with not having the cork on it. Maybe I got lucky with the cork depth.

@BilZol - thanks. This is in preparation for two level cooking in the MM. :)

Gotcha. We started doing it when we were smoking two meatloaf on it and never changed it.

Thats how I have my Small and Large set up.

@GrateEggspectations - I spoke with BGE in the UK about the temperature detection, they said it was from the tip all the way up to the miniscule groove around halfway up, so all of that needs to ideally be inside the Egg in order to get an accurate reading. This is consistent with what I saw last night.

@Stormbringer: Thanks for sharing. I cooked bread in a Dutch oven several weeks ago that required a cork spacer and resulted in the groove not being entirely within the dome. My readings were a mile off. Based on the info you got from BGE, it sounds like you do in fact need to ensure the groove is inside the Egg. Thanks again for passing that along!
