Cast iron grill

does anyone know where I can get a good cast iron grill( for a large egg)? The green egg dealer where I'm from is too expensive.

Assuming you mean a CI cooking grate?

You can get them off Amazon if you like, but they're not BGE brand.

I have the BGE version and love it.

When I'm slow cooking I still use the original grate, but when I'm cooking hot I always reach for the CI.

  • I don't own this one, but it looks like a good deal. I don't have a CI grate and haven't decided if I want one yet or not.

What anticipated issues are there with a CI Grate?

the issue? The very design is flawed IMO. Cast iron expands when heated so what happens with the circular outside ring is it stays cold relatively speaking and that causes stress resulting in cracks. Used to be guys would take a hack saw and cut through the ring in 2 or 4 places. Now that it has a 5 year warranty that cutting would void the warranty so you take your chances of it cracking, but it can be replaced.

Here's a better design which allows expansion. BTW I cut this out of a rectangular piece for my small.

I see.  Why would they continue to use a continuous ring then?

yuppers...for sake of the warranty alone I would go BGE only! Plus taking care of it isn't a bad idea as well! =)

Found a pair of Mangrates on clearance for 30 bucks.  Really pleased with the 16lbs of Ohio CI, and it's performance.  Best thing, I transfer them to my Jumbo Joe and OTG.

I wonder if the BGE CI grid failures are due to misuse vs design, dropping a 13"er on the spider, right above the blazing hot coals?  Any piece of CI will eventually crack, or warp, there.  Why I see a lot of spinners(warped old CI), from the wood stove eye, forcing the heat towards the center of the pan.

@RRP you may know as you're one of the more experienced EGGers on here.  What's your thoughts on these grates?  Other than the expense.  http://www.quadgrate.com/

I got this from Academy a few years ago. Not as thick as the BGE one, but it was $20 or $25. The insert fits an 18" grill, and is perfect for the large BGE. (Pic credit goes to Google). The box has 2 pieces in it - the outer ring and the insert.

I'm a firm believer in cast iron cookware, so when I bought my Egg, it was a no-brainer, I was getting the iron grill as well.

I only use the steel grate for low temp cooks, everything else gets iron. Keep it clean, use both sides, and wipe some Crisco on it after a really long hot cook. I use my fingers to get Crisco out of the can, then press it into the wire brush I use for cleaning, then brush the grill as normal.

If it ever cracks, which would be 5 years and 1 day after purchase, I would just continue to use it. It's like a dent in your car, you don't junk it for a dent, you continue to use it no longer perfect and after a while you don't even notice it anymore.

Sorry I've never even heard of that grate. I know @SpringChicken and @Mickey have custom laser cut grates like those so maybe one of them will shed some light. Funny but all I see was $399 which is hard to believe - I know I'll pass at that price!

$399.00?   They are $129.00.  Lol.  Which is still hefty.  But I've waste that much on other crap.  Worth it if it functions well.  I don't think I'd ever break it.

    Regardless,,,,thanks for the reply.

me bad - I missed that - all I saw was this blurb - guess that $399 was for custom grates:
This is just a sample of what your campaign site can look like. As you see it here the price is $399. You provide the text to replace the existing text and we'll work together on the graphics and images.

@Hotch How do you like the grate? I meet a good egger recently and he traded me this same grate for a bag of Rockwood lump. I just took the weed burner to it yesterday to clean it up a little. It's one heavy grate. I haven't seen much reviews on it here and interested in your thoughts. Thanks

It is the best. I have had it for 3-4 years now. I put it in the dish washer to clean. Built like a tank. Have to finesse it on the Ceramic Grill Store PSWoo but that is the best thing to pair it with!!

I have a CI grid. Bought it because I had always wanted one. Don't use it much any more. Personally, I prefer to sear in a CI skillet or griddle, or a piece of steel plate for an edge to edge sear. Do grid marks look better? Yep, but...

Saw a comment by Kenji (Serious Eats) the other day. No context here (we were discussing eggs), but it fits. He said, "Sort of like how if I see a steak with grill marks, I'm already thinking I probably won't enjoy it because it was cooked by someone who cares more about the appearance of good technique than actual good technique, and yet, perfect diamond grill marks is something cooks aspire to." Apparently, a slap in the face to grill mark fans. I think he's exaggerating, but he makes a point. Maillard is good. More Maillard is better.

You can buy a CI skillet for $20. Yard sale, $1!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

What grate is avaiable for the Minimax? Did you have to customize that grate to fit @Hotch? The stock grate doesn't do the job for me.
