I have a Thermopen and love it. My dad is getting his first Egg this month and wants to know if the Big Green Egg insta-read thermometer is just a good as the costlier Thermapen. Anybody used both and can compare?

Go with a Thermopop.
There's a single thing I've cooked on the Egg that the Thermopop didn't work just fine.
They're better looking than the BGE versions.New Albany, Ohio -
I have thermopop, I can't see the extra money for a thermopen

No comparison... You won't be happy till you have a Thermopen....Charlotte, NC - Large BGE 2014, Maverick ET 733, Thermopen, Nest, Platesetter, Woo2 and Extender w/Grid, Kick Ash Basket, Pizza Stone, SS Smokeware Cap, Blackstone 36"

Thermopop is a great option. I think its cheaper than the BGE thermo anyway.

No trying to hijack this conversation... But... are you all speaking on the Thermoworks Super Fast Thermapen? Amazon $148.99? Is it really worth 2-4 times the price? I love quality and don't mind spending to get good quality. It being my birthday today I would love to get myself a birthday present but want to make sure the $148.99 it worth all the hype.

Don't buy it from Amazon. Go to the Thermoworks website. They have a warning there about buying counterfeit ones off amazon and other online retailers.
Sign up for their emailing list. You will get open box item emails and sales info. There are some pretty good deals they have on those emails.LBGE #19 from North GA Eggfest, 2014

The thermapen direct from thermo thermoworks is around $95 and they have sales and open box sales all the time. You can usually get it for around $79 if you wait for the sale. The thermopop is a great alternative for a cheaper price. Not as fast as the thermapen but still great. If you must buy from Amazon (to hide it from the wife) the Javalin thermometer has had great reviews from users here and is around $59 I think.Aledo, Texas

Buy the thermapen from thermoworks. They have 15% off entire site Sale that ends today or tomorrow. Very rare sale. I like the dot thermometer too for probe you leave in during cook. Get the silicone protective cover for the thermapen too. The sale code is on the site to enter at checkout

Thermapop works great and it's 30 bucks or less. Save your money unless 2 more seconds is to long to waitNarcoossee, FL
