OT - Pit master arrested for assaulting woman with brisket

DANVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Tempers flared and brisket was thrown leading to an arrest at this year's annual Kentucky State BBQ Festival.

Mike Owings, 42, of Cunningham, is charged with wanton endangerment.

On Sunday, Danville police say Owings and another BBQ pit master got into a disagreement over sharing a cooker. Mary Berry, of Bardstown, told police that Owings threw a hot piece of brisket at her, hitting her in the shoulder, neck and head. The hot meat was estimated to be between 200-250 degrees.

Danville police say Owings admitted to throwing the the brisket after losing his temper, but "didn't mean for anyone to get hurt."

They gave the temp a range, and depending on how hot the pit was, when it was taken off, and what got thrown that might be closer than you think.  

Remember that meat cooks from the outside in, so to get an internal temp around 200-205, the exterior (probably the part that hit the woman) will be much warmer and closer to the air temp in the cooker.
