Pizza on MM to Woo or not to Woo?

Although the official details of the MM seems to say that making Pizza on the MM is a no go, i read some post already and tried it this evening myself. I used the plate setter with leggs up, original 13" grid with on top a 13" stone and had really issue to get the temperature above 300F even with BGE charcoal. I think the main issue is the airflow due to stone size and the minimum space it is lifted by the plate setter. So i'm wondering if a Woo ring could help me out, and if so should the stone be smaller like 10" or so or would it be high enough to run with the 13" stone? Will post a picture later on.

Stone looks HUGE to me. No air flow, no heat. The grid on my large is 18", the stone BGE sells for it is 14". Works fine. Almost as well as my oven =)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Today another round, this time with BGE medium stone and plate setter with leggs down to move things a bit up. Was a slow start but afterall it got close to 500F.

Looks good, and I'm glad to hear it worked out.  I have the stone for my MM, and had some trouble the one time I used it.  I don't have the platesetter yet, but I think it should be in any day now.

I'm hoping the MM can be the go to pizza cooker, but time will tell.  Did you do multiples or just the one pizza, I'm wondering how the heat retention is for several in a row.

I did another one afterwards and that one was going much faster, for sure it can keep the temperature long enough todo more, maybe next time i will use less charcoal to create more air underneath and for sure leggs down for the platesetter, although instructions tell otherwise.

The pizza looks great.  Just curious why would you not be able to cook pizza on the MM?

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

They probably meant that for morons like me.... I'm gonna burn the crap out of some pizzas trying though.

  • Well if you look at the bigger models you will find more space/air between the fire ring and the grid, something that is not seen at the MM. The first attempt without the Woo gave me trouble, my non BGE (cheap stone) was larger (grid size) and there was overall less airflow. Now with the BGE stone, smaller size but thicker and the Woo to lift the grid it seems to work great, so maybe that is the reason it is not mentioned in the official specs.
