Lodge Skillets

I want to purchase a skillet or two for the egg.  I know this question will be about preference and types of cooks that you do... but in your opinion- what is the most versatile size skillet that you use and why.

the 12 inch just fits the large with the handle on and i like the little one they make for making personal sized meat pies or bangors and mash etc when im cooking for myself. i think the 12 is called a 10 skillet though, be careful with their numbering system

also look on ebay for those older cast irons, the newer lodges all are preseasoned, ive had problems with the preseason flaking and would probably not buy another lodge pan because of it

I have a 12" skillet and like it a lot.  I also have two dutch ovens, a 5 qt and a 2 Qt.  The 2 Qt DO is really useful when doing sides for 2-4 people - beans, Brussels sprouts, etc., and can fit on the grill with the meat.

I have been totally satisfied with my Lodge cast iron cookware.  Never a problem with the seasoning, clean with water and a scotch-brite pad, give a light coat of oil and store.

  • Might I suggest a lodge 5 quart double dutch oven.  Walmart had them online for about $30 recently.  I do not own one either, but it looks like it will easily fit on the large as the dimension is listed at roughly 10.5".  With the loop handles I doubt it would be over 16" plus you get a dutch oven in the deal for what appears to be a very reasonable price.  It is L8DD3 on the Lodge site.

  • I have a 17inch Lodge skillet that I got and I love it the only problem I found was that it didn't fit in my large until I trimmed the handles I had to cut about 1/2inch off each handle  when I ordered it online I assumed being that it was 17inch it would fit into the 18 inch diameter of my large didn't realize the handles but I trimmed it and now it fits and I use it very often I have made everything from sausage &peppers in tomato sauce to eggs  fry bacon make pan cakes grilled cheese sandwiches it's almost like having a flat top grill and the more I use it the better it gets

I have three of their skillets plus a DO. I use a small one indoors for a couple fried eggs and so on. A medium (I think it's 6 or 7 inches) is great for cornbread and a large one for searing if I don't want to go direct over the fire. For instance, I like to cook tenderloins that way, either beef or pork. Other chops and steaks then straight on the grate. If you can get a cover for the large it's great for low braising.

  • I have a 10 inch lodge that works well. I'd like a 12. I have an XL so real estate to put the pan isn't the problem.

thanks for the feedback. I have a lodge DO and a small I guess 8 or 10" round griddle that doesn't see much action.  Sounds like the 10 or 12" is the winner.
