I figured I'd post this up in case folks are struggling to get really high temps in their Egg...it might not cure all but it's helped me a lot.  It took me a few times to figure out why I could get up to 700+ deg temps quickly on some days and I struggle so bad on other days.  Turns out it was the difference in the amount of lump I was putting in my Egg.   Now whenever I'm building a fire for a high temp cook I only fill my firebox about 1/2-2/3 full....leave plenty of room around your lump for air.  High temp cooks are generally for minutes not hours so you don't need a ton of lump for your cook.  What I noticed was that I was loading my firebox right up like I would on a low and slow cook but that wasn't allowing the good air flow I needed to get those high temps quickly, now I load more or less lump depending on the temps I want to hit and maintain.

Unfortunately I can never time having my pizzas made with my egg coming to temp, so I do need and hour and a half at 700° to cook 3 pizzas. Sigh.
I finally took the plunge and bought my large Big Green Easter Egg from Roswell Hardware in Roswell, GA 03/31/2012
