Burnt out thermometer Probes

I seem to be burning out probes for my remote thermometer (just the cheap Walmart brands). I did a beer can chicken (350F) with a brand new probe and by the end the probe cable was shot and pretty much burnt to a crisp. Thoughts? Anyone else experience this and have any suggestions? Is it just cheap probes?

The newer maverick is rated to 600 I think - never had them on above 350 or so.

You can wrap them in foil to prevent burnout. I'd just invest in a Maverick.
