Lighter fluid blues

I just heard from a friend of mine that a friend of his just bought an xl and used lighter fluid on his first cook. Now of course everything has the smell of lighter fluid. What is the remedy? How long will it take? I suggested he burns several loads of lump thru the egg with no food in hopes that he can eventually burn it out. Any comments?

The old "friend did it" comment. It's okay, you can admit it was you...!!! :-))
I agree. Just burn a hot fire and bet it will get it out.Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013 -
Chubbs,
I've had my egg for around a year and have threatened everyone big enough to light a fire, well they wouldn't have to worry about cooking any more. I have always been a fan of a chimney, and now denatured alcohol gel. Good stuff!! -
Dump some cheap whiskey on the inside walls of the egg.

obviously he didn't do any reading before he bought the egg and tried to use it like a weber. I have converted a number of Weber people to lump using either a chimney but NEVER with lighter fluid. As other stated, get it hot and let it burn @+400 for at least an hour or more...

The only time I ever let myself use lighter fluid is when I'm using a chimney to start my charcoal. I have, to some extent, gotten away from this practice but I still do it occasionally. The little Weber lighter cubes work better, but when I'm out of them for some reason, I whip out the can of starter fluid. If you let your charcoal completely ash over and prepare it properly in the chimney, any and all remnants of that starter fluid will be completely removed before the coals hit your cooker.
(is prepared for the hatred directed my way after this post)

If he's used to using lighter fluid in that weber maybe he is also used to the taste he has now?
Some of my weber friends think lighter fluid tastes and smells are real BBQ! -LOL
Like other have mentioned, burn it off and move on.

NOOOOOO! Drink the cheap whiskey and watch the egg sit at 500 or so for a few hours

@JMSetzler - I only use a chimney to start my XL, but NEVER with lighter fluid. I use 2 pieces of news paper (at the moment that is actually packing paper from when I moved a few years ago... I still have a few really big boxes of the stuff). If I need to speed up the process, I have an old 1500W hair dryer that works wonders for getting it really hot really fast. I am trying to obtain an old cast iron hand-crank fan used on my grandparents forge. it still puts out a ton of air really fast.

I also like using a little canola oil on newspaper as a starter.
Thanks for all of the advice.
