How do you start your egg?

Just curious.  I use an electric starter and have just tried the little waxy squares. I plan on getting a mapp torch for the mini. What starts your fire?

    I have been using one bge starter or one weber white cube. Light in one spot. Just haven't seen the need for anything else. Plus with all the other eggcessories, not sure where I could put anything else.

    Our good ole pal Village Idiot said he used 91% isopropyl alcohol. I have been using the fire starters like Gato, but I may try the alcohol.

  • I have no complaints with the electric starter or the waxy squares. Squares impressed me tonight with 40mph winds, stayed lit. The other night i ordered the High Que fire grates for the medium and mini. Hope the newspaper  works as good as they say.

    Two ways: For the Large I use the big torch and for the Mini the small torch. And jmsmrdk I have the High Que in all and still like the torches to light.


    Salado TX Egg Family: 2 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max (I'm good for now). 

  • It's worth the money, fastest way I have found to start the fire.

  • I use a large propane torch just like the picture above.  I can go from nothing to red-hot coals in 2 minutes

    Chimney starter
  • Small MAPP torch.  Does the trick every time.
  • I light a small piece of  firestarter in the middle of a circle of lump (whatever is leftover from my last cook).  Once the core fire is going strong (~5-7 min) I add more lump.  Works every time.

    Chimney starter with about a teaspoon of cooking oil on the newspaper...a little overkill but it never misses.
    If you don't think too good, don't think too much.

    Since getting the high que grate, either paper towels or newspaper with a little vegetable oil.

  • Guys, get yourselves a small piece of Household Plutonium.  Just drop it in the middle of the lump and you're to temp in almost no time at all.  And it won't wear out for about 80 million years...

    Yes, I had to google the half life of Plutonium for this joke.

  • My advice is slow down and enjoy the experience (cold beer). I light with one cube, split in half and placed in two different places. The high que grate mentioned earlier is a must. Never dump your charcoal into the egg. I remove all unused charcoal from the previous cook and place the cube directly on the grate and light. Then I place large pieces on the flames and wait maybe two minutes before adding the remaining charcoal. Ready to go in 10 - 15 min.

    The chimney works good, costs me a couple sheets of newspaper. You can fill the chimney or partially fill it, depending on what you want to do. It's going in 5-10 minutes then you dump the hot coals into the Egg and distribute how you want you fire to burn. I find you get a nice even burn going. From there the Egg accelerates on up to whatever your target temp is.
