Adding a picture or avatar.

When I click on my profile and change picture the box pops up but the button/square is grayed out. How do I add a picture? Is it an IPad thing that won't let me do it?

One more thing that is confusing is the discussion box - all of the little icons are grayed out and don't work either. If someone could help me I would appreciate it.
