..you have removed the gasket and decide to do a cook with a 1/4" gap in the back. Mind you, it wasn't planned that way. I tried to throttle the egg back at 250 and let it creep to 275 for a butt cook tonight. When it hit 300 I almost choked the fire out and it went to 325 so I started looking for reasons.
I have loosened and retightened the bolts as much as I feel comfortable at dark thirty with a 340* egg. It is mostly ceramic on ceramic right now :(

haha that was like the small you brought to Ocala and we fired it at midnight without checking it out first.
-
OK, now I am getting really old and forgetting stuff or you are? My small at ocala?
-
The one you brought me, think it was 09
-
That must have been the one the my neighbor was selling. Heck they all start to run together at some point :P
-
It had a good 1/4" or better gap in the back. Had to run out the next morning to buy a wrench to adjust it. Thats why it took until 3 am to cool it down.

Make a gasket out of HDAF til you can readjust the dome to fit the base.
-
Pat...Are you sure that wasn't Kims egg???? I don't think it was Crimsongator...

I have one large that is pretty much no gasket. Mine has a good gap in the back and I have tried to get it to sit down on the base but, I still have a gap. I may get a rutland this summer. I use it for quick cooks mostly but, It does take longer to snuff it out. I may try to get the dome to sit down on the base better if not I get the gasket. :ermm:

That was the one that rolling egg went to look at and passed on. I bought it and brought it down. I didn't know it had a gap. I usually turn in to a pumpkin at about 8:30 :-)

I'm sure LC. Gene had bought it for me and brought it to Fla. Same year he found the mini for Mike and I drove to Orlando and picked it up. Looked like a swap shop in the parking lot that year, I think you brought a mini up for Kim and Ginny then also.

Tim, take the springs off, loosen the hinge bolts, adjust the bands and snug the hinges back up then put the springs back on. It works
-
Thanks Pat. I did everything but, take the springs off first. I'll do it tomorrow.

As a workaround, if something like this happens again take some paper towel roll to about the width of the ceramics (3/4" on a large & medium). Roll the paper towel in aluminum foil leaving some extra foil on the sides to wrap down the side of the egg to hold contraption and you will have a workable makeshift gasket.

I did that today Pat.
I guess the springs were holding the back of the dome off the base. I got the dome on the base all the way around.
Thanks Pat -
Glad it worked for you Tim,, I learn everything the hard way
