lower vent freezing!

My lower vent has been frozen shut the last couple of times, I have been using the weed burner to slightly warm it up and get it sliding.
But does anyone have an idea to prevent this other than moving south of mason-dixon line?

If it's not too hot, a few shots of silicone spray on the tracks might help. It's available wet or dry.

So, you are getting moisture in the vent track at some point (from wet snow, rain or heavy dew) and then when the temps drop it freezes... and the vent door gets stuck?
Hmmm. That's a new one on me. In the winter, I use silicone spray on the gaskets on my pickup doors and my camper doors, but any kind os spray in the vent track would collect ash and get gooey. Plus it may stain the stainless.
How about drilling a couple of small holes in the bottom of the U portion of the track to allow the water to drain?Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
My lower vent freezes shut all the time right now. A quick shot with the MAPP fixes it in a jiffy, however, stay away from your ash screen. The MAPP will also burn holes through it in a jiffy. :pinch:

I get porkcicles forming on my lower vent all the time in the winter during low and slows with the egg stuffed with butt. The thing is like a sauna. I also get water dripping out during the warmer months. Rarely does it freeze shut and usually requires a little nudge to open. I think the pork fat keeps it lubricated.

Mark,
That's what I do. Learned a lesson about the screen the hard way :(

I should just take a leak on the damn thing. Kill two birds with one stone; relieve myself and unfreeze the vent at the same time.
-
That would depend on the ambient temp and distance of leaking part to target. I would be ok but you might just make matters worse

My sister is coming for dinner tomorrow night. Maybe I'll show her my new trick.

This happens to me also. I use my wifes hairdryer!

We've been gone for a month and had the XL covered. Went to use it today after removing 8 inches of snow from the cover and found the lower vent "stuck". Not sure if it was frozen or just a cold grease film. A large push freed it up and we proceeded to fire it up and cook chicken breasts. I suspect it was a grease film that firmed up with the cold weather and lack of use. Everything ok now.

I've done many sub freezing cooks over the past 2 winters, but I encountered this for the first time 2 weeks ago. I put some heat to it and knocked it open.

ya, but then your lower vent will be frozen instead :Pcanuckland

We had cooked a brisket in early Dec, a long cook, which probably got things some what greasy. We didn't have a chance to clean the BGE before we left. Over the month we were gone, I'm sure the grease formed and set during some very cold weather. Today when I tried to use it, we had to over come the sticky lower vent.

My lower vent was frozen today and I always keep my egg covered. It was -13 degrees when I started the cook. Just started the coal and left the cap off. The egg warmed up and and the vent was stuck no more.
