All I can seem to find around here is Map-Pro which is listed as a suitable alternative to MAPP. It also looks like MAPP was stopped from being produced in 2008.
Bernzomatic has what they call Max Power Propylene which sort of sounds like Map-Pro but doesn't really say it.
I'm confused...

ive gone thru a couple mapp torches, went to a cheap weedburner from harbor frieght and havent looked back. if you have an old propane tank thats still servicable it is a good alternative, cheaper to run, throws more heat, lights faster, and lasts for many yearsfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I would add that with a little diposable camping propane tank the weed burner is portable and light.

I'm sitting here looking at my mapp tourch with a fat boy bottle. It says "max power propylene". I never noticed this before, I just picked up the yellow bottle. Works fine for me. I like using the mapp tourch over the weed burner because I also use it to light my wood stove.

I use a Max Power Propylene [MAPP?, sounds like it to me!] that I purchased at a Lowes store earlier this summer, so it is not something that was discontinued two yrs ago. I found a unit that has a 5ft hose between torch and tank. I love it! Lights fast and I am ready to cook in much less than time using the starter cubes. It does cause new lump to spark, so I make sure I am wearing my heavy glove and I always have some used lump on top, which seems to spark much less. I think sparking comes from the dust in new lump, but I don't know for sure.
Anyway, genuine MAPP or not, it is my preferred method for lighting.

I agree with Fishlessman, I bought a weed burner from Harbor Freight and I don't regret it a bit. Doesn't use much propane, lights the charcoal fast, inexpensive and easy. Mapp torch and gas is expensive.

In two years im still on my first tank of mapp gas. I'm not sure how many times I have started my egg but it is well over 100 and probably over 200. I keep expecting it to run out so I bought a spare bottle about a year ago and have not used it yet.

I too used the Mapp but switched to the weed burner. Quick easy and can get the coals ready in a minute. It's also fun to fire up after a few beers and blow fire with the burst mode...LOL

I have a weedburner and a MAPP torch. I like the MAPP torch a lot better.

... MAPP is no longer available. Petromont stopped producing it a couple of years ago. When the news came out, many plumbers hoarded it, as did folks that do glass blowing. I bought a dozen cylinders because I use it in my metalworking. I just finished my last one.
For us barbecuists, MapPro gas works just fine. I can't tell the difference with the new gas for my metal forming and hot bending.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
DO you guys have hoses attached to the lighter? I only seem to find the handheld kind, used by plumbers and stuff for 'welding' copper pipes with that solder and stuff..
Here's a link. Do you guys use these as well?

Or should I be using this kind with a hose and 2 tanks?

Thanks!! -
I know MAPP gas makes everyone feel all studly but trust me, a handheld propane torch works just fine. Starts my fire in less than two minutes; fire's steak-ready in 15 tops.

no need to buy the expensive 2 tank brazing set up! Personally I have this 30" hose model attached to a MAPP tank purchased several years ago when this method was the hot topic on this board.
After using it about 3 or 4 times I never used it again. I think the joy in cooking with a BGE is the ability to slow your life down and relax for a while while the lump comes up to temp.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -

Actually one these makes you feel studly. Heheheee. No regulator, just a neelde valve... and 100,000 BTU's is what this baby kicks out. On a still night, it sounds like a small jet is landing in your backyard.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
