Looking for some advice on which direction to go for a cast iron DO. After a month of searching craigslist, thrift stores and garage sales to no avail, may just pull trigger on new one. Can't decide on:
5 qt with wire bail handle or...
Lodge 5 qt combo cooker (lid is also a pan - side handles only - no bail)
Any benefit to buying one with bail? Advantages/disadvantages of old vs new (in case I do end up finding a used one)? What do you all think based on your eggsperience?
As always: thanks for your help!

I'm all for used ones. I stumbled on 7 peices once in Denver. Picked them up and reseasoned them. Love them!
I don't think it matters bail vs handles. Thinking that is personal preference.Molly

As Molly said used are fine, if their not broke in half, they can be reseasoned and will be good forever. check prices on new, in my area, used cast iron has become a big deal, old pieces will often cost much more than new, may be different where you are.
The 5 qt. with bail is a good first piece, CI are like eggs, you will end up with more than one piece! -
Hey Gregg,
As Molly stated. I don't think it matters bail vs. handle. I have a 7 and 5qt. I will buy a 9 also at some time. I would go bigger vs. smaller with your first purchase.
It didn't take much to fill the 7qt with my first soup on the egg.

We have the Lodge 5 Qt that the cover is also a 10" skillet with the loop handles. We love it, it works well in our small the cover is great for corn bread.
We also have the Tramontina enameled CIDO from Wallyworld and they also work well. -
Greg, I found an 8 quart CI DO at the Nashville flea market for forty dollars no lid and a bail wire handle that I later removed. Most of my cooks do not require a lid but if I need one I simply flip a CI skillet over the top. Good luck in your quest for the right CI DO. Tim
In the pic below I first seared a nice chuck roast in the bottom of the CI DO then put a trivet in and added the rest of my recipe. We ate very well after this cook. :P

Thanks for the input all!
As fire egger states, the used ones I have found are more expensive than new (and hard to find). I'll keep looking. Leaning toward the two-in-one aspect of the Lodge double.
Thanks again. Have a great weekend and Happy Halloween! -
Costco is selling a Kirkland (Costco) brand enamel one for ~$46 in the store, $57 on line.
