Heart defib implant and cell phones

My Mothers husbands name is Don and he is up in age and has some kind of new heart defibrillator/monitor implanted inside him. Will a cell phone close to him have any ill side effects? I asked my Mother if she asked the Dr.'s but she did not and we live 1000 miles away. Thanks Tim

Tim,

I am no expert but the implants are sensitive to am radio frequencies. Cell phones operate in the Mega Hz range so I think he is OK.

I have had a defib/pacemaker for 5yrs and have never had a problem with anything. It is implanted in my right chest and I have carried my cell phone in my shirt pocket several times

Tim,

I am not sure about that but you may want to do some more research. I work with a lot of RF equipment and I know that they interfere with pacemakers and de-fibs.

Thanks, He has had one for five years now and has recently got a new one that lasts for seven years. The first one has worked several times. He would call the Dr. and put this device over his implant and the records will transfer over the phone and give the Dr. an instant report. Anyway my Mother keeps her cell phone turned off until she needs to use it and it keeps us from calling her unless we call the house phone which is no problem. Tim

You know I feel so powerless not being able to go to their house and doing for them. I'm sure they will need their grass cut soon and I also understand they have real good neighbors. Thank goodness. Tim
