Another shining example of the durability of the Big Green Egg. This is a picture that was sent to us. Apparently this EGG was blown out into the ocean during a Hurricane that hit Pensacola. It was recovered by a contractor who was rebuiling a pier. The EGG was about 150 feet off shore. The grey spots are actually barnacles!

That looks like Sparky's chiminea at Eggtoberfest after about 2 cord of firewood was torched in it that night.
-
Rod,
Since you are at the beach keep an eye out and you may find a BGE washed up on the shore...LOL
Great story & advertising Bobby.. -
Not disputing the claim, but that wood on the handle looks awfully good for being in Salt water for a year or more. I would have thunk the sea worms would have eaten though a few places.
-
That's one expensive popping cork
-
Did they say if it seems usable & are they going to try it?
Might only be good for seafood recipes anymore. -
That is amazing. I wonder if you could use it. Would the ceramic be saturated with salt water? I wonder what happened to the fire box and fire ring and what it looked like. Tim

Glad he rescued it before the oil got to it!

One thing I love about the egg is that the body and glaze are inert, won't degrade, impervious to weather and can be a perfectly functional cooker for hundreds and hundreds of years.... literally an heirloom cooker.
That photo and story is very cool, Bobby. A perfect example of the durability and longevity of ceramics!

Awesome!!!

not having any nautical sense to my name how does one go about cleaning barnacles off a ceramic egg - let alone inside where I assume they are also.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Most of the scarring are marks that barnacles make when they attach to something, I only see a few that may be actual barnacles. FYI, I live in the part of Florida where the manatees come into the warm spring water in winter. They have barnacles all over them when they arrive, but the critters can't live in fresh water, so after a day or so they fall off and the manatee is left looking something like this egg. By spring the scars are healed.

Fire it up and throw some shrimp on it.

Sure does. Did it ever clean up?

Amazing - I like the character marks. Polkadots...

What a find it must have been, like a treasure chest up from Davey Jones locker. Amphora from the deep. Scuba Diver comes up and says,"Your not gonna believe whats down there on the bottom....an EGG!"
Questions; Will the food cooked in this egg be salty tasting? If I put my ear to the top vent can I hear the ocean? :silly:
Great find, nice story Bobby. Durability is a great attribute of the EGG. -
All is well and life is good. Thanks for asking.
Construction is done and finally working in the new and very slick work space. Come by and see it. I'll cook you something other than bbq. :~)

BGE - Mini, Small, Medium, Large -
Think you can get Ed to buy into the concept?
Maybe stuff them with oil absorbant and drop them a hundred miles off the coast. -
or in the Bering Sea so each BGE comes with crabs inside? ...sorry, that's a different channel... :SRe-gasketing America one yard at a time.

the egg wouldn't do well if the "dogs" didn't work right
-
