How long until one attains a clean burn when starting the egg?

    Fill with lump to top of fire Ring.Light egg,leave bottom vent completely open,no top,let it burn til it goes out.That's a clean burn.If you mean how long after you light till it's good to cook on,about 30 mins.Hope it helps! :) You may fry the gasket but they are USLESS anyway if your dome and base are allighned correctly!

    Depends on a lot of factors - temp, amount of lump, nex v. used lump, brand of lump, etc. A rough estimate is 20-30 minutes.

    Just wait for the smoke to clear and then smell it. If it doesn't have that sharp chemical odor you're good to cook.
