I thought I read something once that someone used pecan shells for smoke. Is it a good thing? How does it work? Any thoughts?

Never tried it (but don't have reasonable access to pecans either) but it looks like a lot of people do! Here's a link to a quick google search...

they work - I also have used whole hickory nuts, but this was an off year so I didn't gather any.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

When we lived in Albany, GA (majority of pecans in this country come from within a 60 mile radius of Albany), we had access to tons of shells. Didn't have an Egg then, but I did buy 8 cubic yards of shells once for mulch for my beds. Only thing I can tell you is that the hulls have plenty of oil in them, if this would make a difference using them for smoke.

I am smoking some Baby Backs right now using Hickory nut shells for smoke. We had the biggest crop of nuts I have ever seen here in Central MA. Will let you know how they come out.
