I have seen many posts on this cut of pork, but never made a copy. I have a 7lb shoulder that I want to cook on Friday. Can I use the same method as a pork butt ?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but have to disagree fish. I buy butts all the time in the 6-7lb. range. I prefer 8-10 pounders, but sometimes 6-7 is all I can get. Mark
edit: Willie, what does the meat packaging say exactly? -
Thanks for responding, I am using your method from your site.

I picked this up from a butcher shop, all it said was pork shoulder weight 7 lbs. This will be my first try.

Is it still bone-in or de-boned? If it has/had a shoulder blade bone in it, it is a butt roast. If it had/has a leg bone(humerus) in it, it is a picnic roast. Both considered part of the hog's shoulder..........

i see picnics sold as shoulder picnics and sometimes marked shoulder and sometimes just picnic. its too small to be a whole shoulder with butt and a picnic unless it was a really small pig. never seen a just a butt marked shoulder but you never know, maybe depends on the area of the country or the butcher himself, but your right, look at the bone structure, its the only way to know 100 percent. doesnt matter for the cook though, its still the same setup, temps, times etc.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I don't see what's so funny about the leg bone.
(I've been warned that Latin jokes fly like lead balloons here, but I still gotta go with it) -
