Temp question/concern

I month or so ago I took off my dome to put on a new gasket. Put it back on and everything seemed fine.
the past few times I have cooked I don't feel like my temp gauge is very accurate. Then I remembered when I took my dome off I somehow turned the gauge. Could that have somehow messed it up? I never took the gauge out of the egg.
This might be tough to follow so i'll explain the best I can. The egg is not on in this scenario. I have lined up the gauge to where it looks like it needs to be and on a 90 degree day it reads less than 50. I swear it used to kind of go alng with the outside temp. then I can twist the gauge one way and the temp can go up as high as i want it too. (make any sense?) I can have the egg completely off and twist the gauge to over 700 degrees. is my gauge broken or hung up one something? I just don't feel like its accurate anymore.

Hi I would take it out and bring a pan of water to a boil. the temp when you put it in should read 212. give it a minute and then turn the little nut till it does. You should be all set
-
See if this helps but if you can easily turn the dial back and forth by hand you may need a new one.
Good Luck,
Bordello

Julie,
I'm a little nuts.
Couldn't help myself and NO, I have not had any adult beverage YET.
Just Funnen,
Bordello -
it does spin pretty easy by hand, but i like the boiling water idea.
how much is a new one and is it as simple as inserting it back into the hole? i might just get a new one. -
Sounds to me that the adjusting nut on the backside is way too loose. Try calibrating and make sure the nut is tight.
-
If you get a new one, I'd highly recommend a Tel-Tru BGE retrofit unit. They're much better quality, IMHO, than the BGE units.
-
yep, get the teltru, you will be much happier with it. get the long stem one, the 2.5 inch stem on their site doesnt work right with the large egg.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
-
If you're looking at a new one check out the link below.

If more questions come back and ask, lots of help from the good folks here.
Regards,
Bordello -
I didn't pay attention and got the short-stemmed one my first time around Then I got used to it and, when I finally got the 5" stem, I promptly bent it on a 6-butt cook :pinch:
-
i use the short one myself, but it takes some getting used to. ive even bent the short one :pinch:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

thanks all. i think ill try the quick fix tonight.
naturally the guy with the egg gets put in charge of the tailgate bbq for this weekend -
so was the nut supposed top tighten at all? i reset it in boiling water, but the nut didnt tighten at all.
thanks
