Plate Setter Question

I asked this question in a thread below that got buried -[p]Has anyone had problems with breakage/cracking with the plate setters? Looking at them, it seems they would be very susceptible to breakage, through thermal shock, at the legs. Just wondering, as I've thought about getting one.

Haven't heard of anyone having that problem. I have my original plate setter that is about 5 yrs. old.[p]Jim

I've had mine about 2 years, also with no problem. However, I do treat it with care since I agree that it LOOKS very fragile. I know my dealer insisted on taking it out of the box and making sure it was delivered to me intact, as if he'd had a problem with people claiming they were damaged in shipping. So I'd say treat it with care and you won't have a problem.[p]TNW

pizza stones are the ceramics that are very fragile....should be heated at the first of a cook.
don't know if this helps, but hope you take the heed....

Really? I would have thought, from the shape, they were safer from any type of breakage. I have one and haven't had any problems so far. I guess anything would be susceptible to thermal shock, if extreme enough temps were encountered.

you should never put a pizza plate on a hot fire....it will break. and also should be stored in the oven...more heat for baking increases it's body strength.[p]

Pakak,[p]My medium platesetter has a hairline crack - I noticed it the other day and was very surprised since, to-date, I have only used it for low temp cooks (< 350 F). I think this is the exception to the rule though.[p]It's still intact, though, and I'm still using it. Hopefully it will remain a surface crack only.[p]TRex

They seem very durable. Plate setters are actually used in ceramic ovens that go much higher than our eggs. [p]Davens sells lots of them to ceramics afficianados.[p]davens@mindspring.com
