Hey Guys, Don't do many 500° cooks but every time the lid is very, VERY hard to open, it opens awkardly kinda sideways cockeyed first then up and when I close it there's a 1/4-1/2 inch gap at the rear with smoke just'a bellowing. After it cools down a couple a hundred, it's OK. A 225° all-nighter is fine. Spring, hinge, band??? It's an XL 6 months old. Was doing pizzas tonite and would'a posted a beautiful spicy crab pizza but was afraid I couldn't even get it out!!!!!

Sounds like the hinge bolts are a little too tight.

I had the same problem with my XL Saturday night but in the middle of a cook. Fortunately I was able to raise the lid open enough to sneak out the spatchcock chicken and it was great!!!
After dinner I went out and loosened a couple of the bolts just a slight amount and WD-40'd all the pivot points. Last night I did ribeyes @ 650 and had no problems. So I am hoping it was just the bolts too tight.
Good luck.
