Dragon Smoke

You know these things look kind of like dragon eggs. Now I'm wondering. While I was getting it fired up for a spatchcock chicken, my egg started puffing smoke.

About once every three seconds a puff of dense smoke came out of the bottom vent. This lasted for two or three minutes. I'm thinking maybe a dragon spirit. The thing spits flames occasionaly too.

    Hey otisdog,

I've been egging since Christmas and have seen my medium egg do this once. LOL, I have no idea how it does it but it was one of the strangest things I have seen in a long time.

It is caused by the rapid burning of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) It's known as a Backdraft to fire fighters and Flashback to us Eggheads.

Be real careful when you open your egg during these conditions or you will be missing a LOT of hair in a really short time. I recommend you take the Metal top off and open the egg no more than an inch with some sort of heat resistant gloves.

Now if this is happening with the food on it usually means you did not give the egg enough time to burn all this off ahead of time. Allow the smoke to clear before cooking.

Thanks for the warning. I would never have expected flashback at temps that low (300)

My big one came when I shut the egg down after a hot cook. I looked to see if it was out yet. It wasn't.

Been wearing my fish cooker gloves ever since.

Thanks again for the advice and to all the regular posters that put up with us new eggers. The steady stream of new owners asking the same questions must get a little old at times. I think I speak for all the new owners in saying how much we appreciate the help we get from all of you.
