I guess it is time to do my first cleaning since i bought the BGE a year ago. How can i do this safely? By the way, I have a nomex gasket, so hopefully i won't have fried gasket for dinner next week.

With nomex it's not the gasket that will fry it's the adhesive, a rubber cement product. I have my 'smoker egg' that could use a burn-out with all the grease built up in the dome but unlike you I have felt gaskets.
So I'm also wondering how long the egg can go at high temp for a spring cleaning....? -
650 degrees for 4 hours it will be clean as a whistle.

might be a dumb question but why would you clean the egg??

you'll know - trust me, you'll know
when the layers of grease and grime turn your stomach and some of it falls off your dome on to your food you'll know it's time!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -

take a wad of aluminum foil and scrub the dome really good that will save a lot of burn time.
