Survey Time: Who can open a bag of lump?

As I was opening a fresh bag of lump tonight something crossed my mind. I have opened many, many bags of lump charcoal over the years and rarely, I mean hardly feakin ever, have I been able to open it using the little white pull strings that seal the bag. I end up just ripping the bag apart. Is this my lack of cordination? Am I not holding my mouth right? I have probably had success about 2% of the time. Is there a secret that no one has informed me of? Any help would be appreciated.

I usually use a sharp knife and just slice the bag but, yes, there is a technique to open any of those bags having a thread. You have to find the correct thread to pull but once you do, the thread comes out in one easy pull and the piece of bag over the top falls off. Very satisfying when you get it right . . .

i think it depends on the style of bag stitcher. some bags are stitched with a "chain stitch" which is designed to be pulled out, but in my experience, most (all!) lump bags are stitched with a "normal" stitch which isn't designed to be pulled out.

There is a secret, you just have to pay attention to what you did that 2% of the time. Works the same way every time.
Me? I just tear it.
Happy ripping!

thats so funny, i openned one of two bags of royal oak i bought a couple of months ago. First one was a snap and the one last night I ended up taking a knife to it.
I was thinking the exact thought last night. Is there a trick -
The adult beverages I usually have keep me from remembering what I did that 2% of the time. I try to figure the thing out before I start but to no avail. Seems like the manufactor would give you a "Pull Here" sign or something.

Jsquared32,
Is that what that stitching is for? I am dead serious, I didn't know that. I have always just attacked the bag with a knife. Dumb Canuck!

I get about 50% pulling the string..it will 99% of the time work..IF..you wanna have the patience..hence my 50% admission..

John:
Try this. The technique was posted way back.
Place the bag between your knees, have the front of the bag on your left knee, the back on your right knee. Start working on the thread closest to you on the right side (back) of the bag. First pull it free (unknot it) and then pull and EUREKA!!! it pulls off. -
speak for yourself!! not all canucks are dumb.... :woohoo:
all you do is take a knife and cut the stitch and then pull it.if one end does not work try the other and you will get it.makes it allot cleaner! :P -
I simply whack the bag a couple of times near the top w/ my Lawn Ranger grid lifter, then tear...
-
I just whack it open with the ash tool, never tried the string thing. That would be too easy!
-
Hey Stranger,
Why didn't you tell me that before?

ps you got mail buddy.......... -
Well I may be crazy but if I'm stupid at least I'm in good company!!! :silly: I gave up a long time ago. Got a pair of pruning shears I cut about 1/2 the top off. Works for me and keeps me from loosing the other half of my mind!

I come up with these crazy questions alot. This is one that has been bugging me for a while. So if I am hearing correctly, cut the string then pull... I have always tried pulling then I cut. Looks like I had it backwards. I will be trying that the next bag of lump I open, probably tuesday next week at the rate I have been going lately. Gotta go check the PIZZA I have on now. By the way, I lurk alot more than I post but wanted to thank anyone reading this who post alot. Your great insite has been put to good use.

The first time I had trouble I just whacked the bag with the ash tool, and that is how I've been doing it ever since.

Yea, but if you whack it, cut it, tear it or slice it, you miss out on that "feel-good" moment that comes with a successful string-pull method.

Yes, some of those strings are designed to be pulled, but many are not. Life is too short to figure out which is which. I find scissors to be the easiest to use. Or if you want to impress people and you haven’t had too much to drink yet; use a sword with a decapitation stroke!

Hey JPF. Nice load of coal you got there. What is that in the corner of the picture? Look like an extra base for a Large.
-
I can open about 95% of the bags with the string, but then I know the secret, lol!The Naked Whiz
-
Hey Whiz. You a magician? Not gonna tell your secret huh?
-
I can get it most of the time by starting out on one end and slicing through the side that has more string on it. Eventually, the lock thread gives, and I can pull off that side of string, leaving a bunch of loops. Then I just pull the remaining string off in one piece.

Wess B your email went to my junk file. once i deleated it I couldn't get it back. Hoss

With all the bags you open I figured you would have an automatic lump bag opening machine. :cheer:
-
I quit trying and just keep a retractable razor knife in my gear box! :silly:Knoxville, TN
Nibble Me This -

Ontario people just do not seem to know there geography!! :woohoo: -
where abouts in NB ?
-
I do something similar, just cutting off the whole top with a pair of heavy scissors.
