MAPP vs propane?

Went to Lowe's tonight for an O-ring, and of course drifted over to tools and ended up with a 36" Bernzomatic "Self Igniting Outdoor Torch" and a twinpak of Worthington propane (I really need a chaperone before I'm allowed to enter hardware stores).
Tool guy said they don't sell MAPP. The torch was $38 and has an igniter on the shaft and a tulip-style nozzle. Packaging says it's "ideal for weedburning, campfires and chimeneas." From www.bernzOmatic.com, here's a pic:
Questions:
(1) Did I get the right gas? Bernzomatic.com says that in air propane burns at 3450 and "Max Power Propylene" (their equivalent of MAPP) burns at 3600. That doesn't seem like a big difference for igniting. Is it worth tracking down MAPP bottles?
(2) The instructions say it works with propane or MAPP. No model number on packaging or instructions. The Bernzomatic website shows a pic of something that looks like this and calls it a JT850, then says the JT850 works with propane only. Can the same torch work on both propane and MAPP?
(3) Anybody have technique suggestions? Tool guy at Lowe's said feel free to ram the tip into a stack of lump charcoal and blast away, or put it under my fire grate and light from the bottom. Really?
Hmm...the Bernzomatic.com site shows a "premium flexible lighter" with built-in bottle opener and LED light. Now we're talkin'!

The only major difference is propane does not work if upside down, which should not be a problem with the model you have. Lighting from the bottom is not very easy with the standard fire grate.

I've used both MAPP and propane and it doesn't seem to make much difference in how quickly the lump gets going. I'm amazed if your Lowe's doesn't sell MAPP, however - mine does. And my igniter (not your device but a short torch with igniter) was part of a MAPP kit, it works perfectly with propane.

I've got the same thing...I originally wanted to get the one from Harbor Freight, but they were out of stock. So, I got the cane-looking weed burner from Lowe's, along with a little blue bottle of propane. It's my backup to my trusty TS8000 MAPP gas torch. That thing gets the job done in a hurry. I light from the top, and usually try to mix in some old lump on the top of the carefully positioned new lump so that I don't get that incredible sparkler effect of the lump popping and snapping.
Either way, I gave up on the cardboard starters because of the amount of smoke and smoldering that was happening when I used those. Of course, if I ever run out of a gas-assisted start of any flavor, I'll use a chimney starter and some newspaper to get the fire going -
my new favourite way:

I am in the piping industry. We use a lot of gasses including MAPP and Propane. Recently I tried to purchase some MAPP gas from my gas supplier and he said that MAPP is being phased out. He gave me a reason, but I can't recall exactly what it was. I just bought the propane.

my mapp quit working so i ordered the looftlighter and it works great.

MAPP gas was phased out, they switched to MAPP Pro which is supposed to work with the old torches. I don't know what the difference is between the two.
-
I find that Propane works just as well as MAPP and is much cheaper. I use a hand held torch and light from the top. My old bernz-o torch would not stay lit pointing down but my new one does with either Propane or MAPP. I get close to a year out of one cannister of Propane.

I use the Guru Golf club. When I ran out of propane I got a bottle of MAPP. Is seems to start the fire much faster The Golf club is angled and you can easily slip it under the lump.

If you are in a big hurry. Try this.
