My Butt is really cold

Dang, never cooked a butt in such cold weather. It's 17 degreees here on Long Island. It took me 20 minutes to blow dry the egg just so I could open the sucker, and then it's been over 3 hours just getting the thing up to 250 degrees! Good thing I'm not trying to serve any food until Saturday!

Seriously, has anyone done a low and slow in such cold weather and did it take so long just to get the thing going?


  • I just did a turkey in Waterloo IA on New Years Eve. It was -6 degrees F out and my turkey cooked for 6 hours. Long enough in that temp! It will warm up and once you have it set, it should maintain around the 250 fairly easily with little wind around you.

    Thats what I figured. I have the BBQ Guru set and am going to hit the sack. Well...maybe one more glass of wine beforehand.
  • which one do you have for the guru? I am thinking of purchasing one and not sure if it is worth the $
  • it was 5 degrees out and I got the egg to pizza temp (600 or so) in about 15 minutes.

  • Should never take that long to get to that temp unless all your vents are blocked with ash.

    Outside temp has nothing to do with egg temps.

    I actually cleaned the whole thing out before I got started so I know that isn't a problem.

    I think it's the competitor. I've had it for a couple years now.

    I would definitely recommend it on low and slow cooks.

    my large was frozen shut this morning, I just lowered a lit 100W automotive trouble light through the top then blocked the hole with crumpled about 15-20 minutes I was able to open the dome on first attempt.

    I did 4 butts a few weeks was -15 when I lit the egg, at around 8 PM. It was -25 when I checked it in the morning. I am definitely going to give the egg more time to settle in when the temps are that cold.
    It was 24 when we got up this's now well below 0 with a nice breeze (20) to keep the bugs off.

    This has been one helluva winter already...and it is going to take some time before it's gone.

    Open all vents, run it up to 400 then put in plate setter, close/adjust vents and it will drop to 250 and hold.
