Mad Max Turkey - My First Attempt
Iowa State Egger
Posts: 337
I am not sure how the tradition got started, but each year we host my wife's family for Thanksgiving (this is our tenth year running). We have done everything from going out to eat to catering in the meal.
I bought my first BGE last spring, and after a few too many coctails this Fourth of July (also a family gathering on my wife's side), I made the announcement that I would be cooking the Turkey this year on the BGE.
I somewhat forgot about this bold statement for about three months until my wife reminded me that I made the Bold statement. Thus, my research started on the forum, but did not take long. Thank goodness for Mad Max and his recipe!
Here are some picture of my first attempt at this feast:
4:30 Central Time - the Prep
23.5 lb Turkey
Icing the Breast
Stock Pot
Butter Paste, Seasoned and "Wined"
Just on the Egg
More photos to Come

Mornin, Dave!
Hey Your bird's looking good. I'm doing a MMT for the first time, too. If it doesn't turn out okay, I'll be forming a support group on the forum. BTW, I have a box of burgers in the freezer just in casr of a disaster
Happy Thanksgiving!

You know, it's 7:22 am here in Central IL and I just stepped out my back door, and am reasonable certain I can smell your turkey cooking . . . could it be?
-
With the winds blowing west to east, I guess the fumes went clear around the planet
-
I think the Turkey was a little big - you can see where the thermometer hit it.
-
You may be able to smell it - it does smell great!
I thinking it is cooking a little faster than expected. Currently about 125 in the breast and 145 in the thigh. We are just about three hours in.
I am smoking a ham as a backup, just in case it doesn't turn out as well! -
Man that is looking good.
-
I think that I am on schedule, still seems a little warm but I can deal with that
We are also smoking a ham to compliment the turkey (and it is also my Oh $hit plan.
-
I knew I was detecting a faint Pork smell that was wafting through with the turkey cloud.
And Boss, with the winds going W to E, we're neighbors with Iowa last I checked
