Has anyone found an easy to remove the platesetter after using it? I am thinking about cooking some cedar plank po-yams and ribeyes this weekend and I can't think of an easy way to remove the platesetter before searing the steaks.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    If you're doing the low-temp cook first, just use some oven mitts to pull it out. Make sure you have somewhere to put it first, though...I have an extra paving stone on my lower shelf for exactly that purpose:

    I have a heavy set of leather gloves. The old fashion thick gray type all though they are black with ash and grease now they still do the trick. Just don't try to hold it long! ;)

    I use this silicon glove.It's rated for 572 degrees.It cost about $12 ;)

    I have done the hot pads, welding gloves and finally about 4 years ago after hearing many eggers talk about ORKA, I bought a pair. They were on sale at Tuesday Mornings for about $20 a pair. Only wish I had the longer ones. Shop around they are out there abot $10 apiece and well worth the $$$. Just do not hang onto the hot plate setter for very long.

  • I started out with a small pair of leather gloves inside a big pair of welders gloves. Worked ok, but if greasy the heat goes right through. Now have the Orka silicone gloves. They work much better. But whatever way you go, have your spot picked out, and pick it up and put it down quickly.

    Ditto on that "put it down quickly" part. I did a cleaning burn (900-1000*) with my plate setter in the Egg and, like a total idiot, I put on the oven mitts and grabbed it. Well, in the three seconds it took to put the silly thing down, I scorched my fingers pretty well and burned through the mitts.

    And I went to college, even. :whistle:

    not trying to be a jerk [i really don't have to try it comes natural :laugh: ] but why are you using the plate setter for the spuds?? the wood is the baffle and using direct allows the bottom of the wood to char a bit. using the setter kind of just makes the plank a serving platter..

    I wasn't really thinking about it at the time. The recipe I found on here said just go 30-40 min indirect.

    I use my showtime rotisserie gloves. Haven't used the machine since I got my egg. You still have to be fast.
