Special meal on our new Mini. Our first BGE!

I promised my wife I would cook something special to christen our new Mini. We prepared my Cedar Plank Salmon Surprise; this is the recipe I entered in the Fire & Flavor Ultimate Grill Giveaway. It’s grilled salmon in a Root Beer marinade. I normally cook it on a cedar plank soaked in red wine but I only had cedar grilling papers. It is served topped with a glaze of Root Beer, orange juice, sugar, ginger, cayenne pepper and chopped roasted pecans. We had sweet corn and my wife’s special slaw made with poppy seed dressing and dried cranberries. It was a Winner!
Here’s how it went. I setup the new Mini on my brother's gasser.
Lit the first fire.
Marinating the salmon.
Prepare the glaze.
Salmon on the new Mini
Dinner is served.

Very nice for a first cook, and congrats on the new egg.
Just a friendly warning, watch that locking support. In that first pic it doesn't look locked forward. The lid will come down if you don't pull that hinge forward.
Keep posting the great pics and recipes. -
Nice! That Grill will make a nice storage unit. I havn't used my grill for 2+ years, only for storage. HA
Soon you will have the large egg, Its natural progression  -
my mini does not look like that!! my grid is even with the gasket??? now i need another mini ???

interesting you pointed that out..... my new mini i just got a couple weeks ago is also even with the gasket.
anyone know why the difference????? -
Dunno, but count yourself lucky.
On mine the grid sits below the gasket level. I got the mini woo ring to get the grid up to the gasket level and haven't cooked without it since.
The mini cooks much better with the grid a little higher in my opinion. -
actually, i just rechecked and it sits between the one in the top picture and gasket level.....
looks like i'm on the hunt for the mini-woo. -
Nice job for the first cook. Interesting sounding marinade. Keep it up.
I hope my first experience turns out as well as yours. You reminded me to make some coleslaw for our dinner. -
point taken but i was thinking that your set up would allow more room for a 'palate setter/heat baffle'?
was up at 5 and will be out by 6:30 tomorrow morning time for bed. perhaps we can compare diminsions tomorrow??

sure. the miniwoo does allow for easy indirect cooking too, but I am a big fan of raised cooking.
Other than cooking on the spider i don't remember the last time i cooked on any of my eggs at less than gasket height. -
Nice.

I plan on making a plate setter for mine out of a pizza stone when I return home for the winter -
Love the Longaberger plates!!
-
WOW Sounds like and looks like an eggceptional meal. I'm going to have to try that as I like Root Beer.
-
Does the mini come with feet or did you buy them separately?
-
Mini does not come with feet. The dealer gave them to me, no charge!
-
can someone point me in the direction of the miniwoo?
-
Hey Danny,
Congrats on the new BGE, and welcome to the EggNation! Cool recipe you got there for the salmon. -
You obviously possess cooking talent.
Is that a Chateau St. Michelle Reisling for accompaniment? -

maybe it's a homemade item? -

Thanks you and you are correct. It was a 2004 Dry Riesling. I’m not a wine aficionado, my wife and sister-in-law always pick the wines. I’m a beer and brats kind of guy. -
Interesting pairing. I bet it was good, especially if there was any sweetness to your glaze(such as brown sugar).

Plenty of sweet from root beer, orange juice and sugar added.
