use mustard on butts and ribs before applying rub. Any special kind to use?

Nope, just regular yellow mustard. It's there mostly to hold the rub on.

Cheap yellow mustard like French's or whatever your local grocery has.

French's yellow or other cheap yellow.

The acid in the mustard help tenderize the meat. I got the mustard idea from a champion brisket cooker.
