Necessary to clean Egg lid?

We are on our 3rd year of a lot of Egg use. Must say all enjoyabe years of Egging. We are getting quite a buildup of soot(?) on the under portion of the lid. We have never cleaned it and wonder if we should. If so, what to use. Thanks in advance for your usual good advice!!!

Cleaning discourages those tasty flakes from falling into your Dutch Oven Chili and on top of your briskets and spatchcocked chicken. Then you have to start using more store-bought seasonings LOL...

Some say a loosely balled up handful of foil and some beer for the foil-user will do wonders for cleaning, if you are into that sorta thing.

after following mr chicken's advice. burn it for an hour at about 600. like a self cleaning oven. do not fall prey to the hotter the better. i burnt off 2 years of sludge at 900-1000 for an hour with out the foil scraping part. very very bad idea. will spare you the details
happy cleaning.

I never intentionally clean my dome. I'll notice the flakes beginning to form and I'll knock off the loose ones with the ash tool, but that's about it....

That all I do,just knock off the chunks.I have used both these eggs since 2004,never cleaned the domes.

same here..knock off the loose crap ever six months or so..do a 600d burn once or twice a year..that's bout it for me....

No need to get fancy. You can scrub off the loose stuff with a loosely balled piece of aluminum foil.

Necessary to clean Egg lid?
