Cooking without gasket?

It finally happened. I went out last night to place the Greek pizza in the BGE and the lid was welded shut. Unfortunately, the Rutland replacement gasket kit is not available locally so I had to order it online. I have cleaned the old gasket off the top and bottom following the directions provided by www.nakedwhiz.com. Will it harm my Egg if I cook on it without a gasket installed? I'm talking short time grilling of steaks, burgers, and chicken. I'm not going to be smoking anything on it until I have a proper seal.[p]I have family in town for the week and my replacement gasket won't come for at least that long.[p]

It will not hurt the egg. Might be somewhat difficult maintaining temperatures.

Greg Hoggatt,[p]Head on over here. You'll see more of the responses. FIW I keep a replacement gasket around just in case. They don't go bad.

never tried it but wonder if you make a 'rope' of foil and wide enough to overlap the edges a bit put it on the base and lower the dome. maybe it will give you a bit of a seal.
try at your own risk as this is just another of my goofy ideas -
I don't remember who it is, but someone here took their gasket off and left it off.

Unless you are trying a low-n-slo pork butt, cook on it.

The gasket on my small died several years ago, and I haven't replaced it. I don't do "lo and slow" on it, but it works fine for searing and roasting. I suppose I am loosing quite a bit of heat, but nothing I am cooking on it takes that long anyway.

My 5 year old LGE still has its original gasket...or some greasy, crumbly remnant of a gasket. It leaks but I can still hold 250 without a problem. I don't think you will have any problem holding a higher temp for a short cook and can't think of how this could damage your egg.
I think fishlessman has a large with no gasket at all.
Cook away!

I've been without a gasket for about 3 years now, and no complaints

Hey Greg Hoggart,[p]I burned my Gasket out about a year ago & haven't had any problems using it without .. You do have to be extra careful when closing it,or dropping the lid toooo hard. It does leak a little smoke around the rim at very low temps " Slow Smoking Meats " , but it does work without a Gasket ![p]I bought a replacement Gasket & haven't seen a need to put it back on !!
