Joe,
there is a little invention called the wiggle stick[p]take a coat hangar and bend a 90 deg angle on it you can then push this through the vent at bottom and wiggle it into the holes[p]I of course stir my lump prior to lighting...I start out by stirring my lump w/vent door closed then I remove my ash from the bottom and then I light and start the wonderful cooking..Good luck[p]Jan

Joe,
I use my grid lifter to "stir" the old lump until you see clear holes in the charcoal grate...anything you can stir the old lump with enough to shake the ash down through the grate will be fine...even the BGE ash tool would work..[p]Wess

Metalhead,[p]The wiggle stick works great. Rather than a coat hanger I went to Home Depot or Lowes and picked up a piece of round steel. I bent it at both ends so it looked like a an 'E' without the middle line.[p]I stirr up the lump as I move the 'L' towards the fire grate. Once on top of the grate I rotate the stick around 360°. So far it is getting loose ash and small pieces out of the firepit without dislodging the grate.[p]The rod is stiffer than a coat hanger so I can put some pressure and not have a coat hanger bend.[p]Enjoy your egg.[p]Kent

Joe,[p]Like Wessb mentioned, I use the ash tool before every cook to stir the lump and get the ash to the bottom.[p]It is actually a pretty cool tool for managing your ash and fire.[p]Greg
