Sorry, it's a Thanksgiving Lump story

for over 8 yrs I have used many different types of Lump. I like Rockwood but the price was a little high for me. I always have had great luck with Royal Oak and the price is very reasonable.

Well, last week I purchased 12 bags at a local HD (like I have done for many years) and I am in trouble. All the bags smell terrible and smoke endlessly. I am trying to do my Thanksgiving Turkey cook and I am in trouble. I started the Egg early with the thought of burning the smoke off.

I might be cooking in the oven today.

I will be making the switch (for good) to Rockwood! Period!

Sorry for the Lump rant on Thanksgiving.

If anyone is near 07834 and has an extra bag of Rockwood, let me know - Just kidding.

I always use RO, and I sometimes find pieces that smoke that haven’t been fully carbonized. Maybe that the word. I find those pieces ahead of time and pull them out or if I missed them and it’s smoking non stop, I open it up and pull the smoking pieces out. It usually clears up after that.

Have not tried Rockwood yet, supposed to have a nice mellow flavor. I like mellow. I have a 1/4 bag Blueshog too smokey. I have a 1/3 bag of BGE Hardwood to smokey. I only use FOGO, free shipping

Wanted to share an update to my lump issues.

after letting the XL sit at 450 -500 for 1hr and 45 minutes the smoke finally burned off and the Turkey when on, right on time.

I did add a little extra used lump from a different egg to make sure I had enough for the cook. I had plant extra.

so, all ended up just fine and it was one of the best Egg Turkeys I have ever cooked, shout out to Trader Joe’s for a very tasty Turkey.

Many years ago I used RO exclusively because it was cheap and available everywhere. You can find it in every dollar store, mom and pop grocery stores, major retailers and the list goes on and on. My guess is it’s probably the most available brand out there. However that is just my guess.

Now more to the point. I used RO with great success for many years and countless cooks. No bad smell or smoke. I was 100% satisfied with it even though I read complaint after complaint on this forum about how bad RO was. For the most part I thought it was just simply that some people did not know how to properly run a ceramic grill or manage a fire. Then one day I had the same issue. The lump smelled acrid both in the bag and while burning. No matter how long I let it burn it still smelled acrid until it basically was ash.

I mentioned it here on the forum and our resident billionaire Ron replied. He pointed out that some RO comes from overseas. I did a little research and discovered our billionaire friend was absolutely correct. The RO from overseas is absolutely horrible. Bottom of the barrel if you will. The American made was just fine and I never had one issue with it.

With that said, I haven’t used or looked into RO in years. But at that time Ron said the RO from overseas had a different color label or something along those lines. Maybe he will chime in again on the different bags/labels etc, etc.

I just bought some master craft coal from Canadian tire and damn did it ever smoke. Looked like I had 10 chunks of wood in the q. Can’t wait to go back to royal oak.

I prefer Rockwood, as it has preformed flawlessly for 5 years, and is consistent, bag to bag. Other brands are all over the place, so you get some good and some real crappy lump. Bought a bag of B&B a while back (cheap) and it had huge chunks of un-carbonized logs that were very heavy. That batch burned terrible, hard to light, and smoked very bad. Total trash…burned like old railroad ties. Won’t make that mistake again!

Rockwood is top notch and the owner is right here amongst us. Stand up guy. I see no reason to look elsewhere for my needs.

Agree, I stick with the same stuff, always predictable.

I did get two bags of FOGO, they had a deal for two bags for $40 at a local spa company, I’m down for $20 bags.

RO is just such an easy pickup for me that I keep it more stocked than the others. After experiencing shortage issues in 2020 and now finding it heavily in stock, I have noticed an abundance of rocks, arrow heads, construction debris etc. And definitely have noticed the stronger smell and smoke. 3-4 beers after lighting normally helps with this. The wife hates eating at 8pm but oh well.
Butt cooks are turning out just fine. I very well may turn to RW exclusively for my higher end hot and fast cooks if things don't improve soon though.

I got Frontier from Sam's and it was bad. I never really knew what all the complaints about X charcoal, but now I know. I wonder if this stuff and overseas RO is illegal African charcoal.
