Today is Tamale 🫔 Day (Candelmas) in Mexico.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

The greatest barrier against all wisdom, the stronghold against knowledge itself, is the single thought, in ones mind, that they already have it all figured out.

"The simple fact is, groundhogs are eminently edible and delicious," writes Everett J. Castro in Mother Earth News. "Like rabbits and squirrels (both of which are valued food animals), whistle-pigs are vegetarians. Thus, their meat, when properly prepared, is quite tasty and tender."Feb 1, 2012

Both squirrels and italian hogs feed on acorns.

And so it follows logically: squirrel prosciutto!

I’ve shot my share growing up, a single adult ground hog can mow off 1/2+ acres of emerging soybeans.  Used to be a fun evening activity growing up with my dad.  However, a  223 poly tipped bullet makes them rather inedible or pre-tenderized depending on your tastes.

My italian grandfather used to eat them occasionally. Very fatty, and very smelly to clean. Guess who got to clean them when he wanted one. Not bad roasted, but never again.

Used to hang with a kid that trapped, like, fur trapping.

Beavers smelled HORRIBLE. I think they had a lot of fat or something that kept their fur dry. Like sheep have lanolin, beavers have some musky gland stuff that makes their fur like a waterproof fur coat.

anyway, beaver can sometimes smell bad. And tastes like pennies.

Had a great uncle that used to have one every couple years.  My grandfather refused to eat one, although his reasoning was geared towards things they ate during the Great Depression.

I was going to search beaver scent glands on my work computer, decided against that.  I thought I remembered something similar. We mostly trapped muskrats as we had a couple muddy bottom ditches that we could catch 100-200 in a month in the winter as kids and saw/smelled the foulness of the tannery shop that took them.  I remember the guy saying once the stink was the beaver, we couldn’t separate that stink from the rest of the stink of the tannery shop.

Learn something new every day.  Seems that their scent glands have culinary and perfume use.  I think I got cap a new topic for his Friday night session.

@FarmingPhD - If you serve it up we will see how it goes.  I'm sure it will be another in the long and entertaining list of "things I learned at a  Zoom speakeasy on a Friday night during covid."  This one could make the top five depending on how the discussion flows this coming Friday.  Hope you can make it to champion the topic and discussion.

You were smarter than my coworker up at Thiokol, who simply wanted to know when the "Beaver Mountain" ski area opened the next day.

I have to say I was laughing like a juvenile while reading parts of that article. My wife wanted to know what was so funny, so I explained, resulted in an attempted shaming of “that’s disgusting and what’s wrong with you?”  Not like I’m in the market to try it, all I could do was laugh.

I can't believe people still believe this ground hog thing. I mean, do we really get pissed off with a rodent when we think he's saying (in a bad year) 12 more weeks of winter?? We've lost our minds.

That "tradition" is pretty tame compared to some of the more contemporary beliefs like the Jewish space lasers starting CA fires and Qanon's theories.
