Lifting grid

How do you all lift the hot grid out of the smoker. I'd thought about taking a pair of chanel lock pliers and welding tips on them to work like the Green Egg grate lifter, but then I thought I might make 2 "T" handles with a smaller "T" on the other end so you just slide it down between the slats in the grid give it a quarter turn then lift the grid out. I thought the advantage to this would be you could lift a hot grate with food on it if you needed to. Any thoughts or ideas on this.
