believe it or not this is my first time cooking with these damn things. I went from gas grill to egg. Crap they light fast. This is so damn foreign to me. Oh well. Heat and meat. I got this.

Forgot to add. We are at the beach and The grill was new and left from previous tenants.

i cooked hot dogs and brats last weekend on a weber with briquettes. Think I overdid it a little (half a bag may be a tad much for 8 dogs and a couple of brats). Couldn't get close to it for almost an hour.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

I usually make sure my weber only has a single layer of briqs in it or it gets wicked hot.
For tube steaks i will pile some briqs on one side and let them cook indirect for a while then give them a little sear.2 LBGE, Blackstone 36, Jumbo Joe

Two things that have improved my briquette cooking.
1. Always light via the Minion Method, and catch target temp on the BTU climb, even if it is a hell's sear. The grayed over glowing coals are the indicator.
2. Always leave a safe zone(aka two-zone).

All good advice. I’m sweating like a whore in a confessional next to that thing. Miss my egg.

For 8 dogs and a couple of brats, you could have just used a weber chimney 1/2 full of lump. would have been much faster and cleaner tasting. (IMNSHO)

Lowe’s carries Stubbs briquettes, I like them a lot.

Enjoy your vacation. Lump works fine in the kettle type grills, and that's all I've used for quite some time.Phoenix -
I just pile the briqs up and use a weber cube for them to light it
