OT - The U.S. Supreme Court rules that states can legalize sports betting -OT

Here's a bit more:
"The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that states can legalize sports betting, breaking up Nevada's monopoly on the practice.

The court upheld the legality of a 2014 New Jersey law permitting sports betting at casinos and racetracks in the state and voided the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. Some states see sports betting, like lotteries, as a potentially important source of tax revenue.

The Supreme Court justices struck down the entire federal law on a 6-3 vote."

And away we go.  Talk about money grabbing opportunities.  Implementation will be entertaining.

It will be interesting to see how the states that have horse racing handle this.

I guess this means they’ll be a thousand draft king commercials on during the game again. Just great.

Remains to be seen how many states will allow this.

Congress is likely to come back with different legislation that will still regulate this.

Since all the major sports leagues are opposed to allowing nationwide sports gambling they'll be spending lots of $$$ lobbying Congresscritters to get rules more to their liking.

I seem to recall  that the NBA is in favor of this approach but it's been awhile since I heard/read that.

I like to keep my house, so I don't see myself taking up sports betting.

I don't remember if it was the NBA or the NFL but their opposition wasn't against having legal betting in more states they just didn't want to have every state making up their own rules/conditions. They wanted federal rules to eliminate that problem and set down uniform guidelines/requirements.

I guess the trick is, can Congress make new federal laws/rules that could pass a SCOTUS challenge in light of today's decision protecting states right? Beats me.

I'm betting (heh-heh) that most states don't even want to allow legal sports gambling in their states. Will be interesting to see how quickly New Jersey makes their move and set that all in place.

This was discussed at length during the local 6 o'clock news, whether it'll ever be allowed in utard; I just chuckled the whole time.

Sen. Hatch has already said he will introduce a bill on the matter:

"At stake here is the very integrity of sports. That’s why I plan to introduce legislation in the coming weeks to help protect honesty and principle in the athletic arena," Hatch said in a statement.

Hatch has a strong belief in Federalism - until it gets in the way of something he wants to do.

Dang.....for once we agree.  Honesty and integrity?  Spare me.

The doublespeak and hypocrisy of the political class never ceases to amaze.  It's not like gambling on sports, both legal and illegal, hasn't been going on for decades...or more than a century probably.  Any integrity he's speaking of either hasn't been affected or was out the window years ago.

I'd think the politicos would be doing handsprings since they're always looking for new and creative ways to get into people's wallets.....and here's a biggie that just fell right in their collective lap.

I wouldn't be surprised when Hatch talks about the "integrity of sports" he is actually setting up just what the NBA and PGA (and I'm sure other leagues will also hop aboard) want - the "Integrity Fee".

The whole notion that we should pay a sports betting fee of one or two percent to a league as an "integrity fee" strikes me as ridiculous. Not surprised that they are trying to get a taste of the action and actually won't be surprised if they succeed. Greedy bastiges.

It’s just like everything else. Too many money grubbing hands in the cookie jar. The black market sports gambling will continue to thrive as the payouts/odds will be better as there are less palms to gease.

Agreed. Plus, it's a lot easier to call your guy and thrown down $50 on each of six games, knowing you'll probably split the six in some combination, rather than going to a window and laying down $300. Even with the advent of a mobile app, I'd rather keep it local when supporting the economy.

In the UK, the sports betting industry is largely deregulated and is huge. Advertising on TV is dominated by gambling, closely followed by loan companies. There used to be betting tax / a levy but online killed that as the bookies relocated offshore.

Yesterday, the Government announced a clamp down on fixed odds betting terminals with a stake reduction from £100 to £2. The punters maybe didn't get the terminology: fixed odds means that over time the machine keeps a % of the take. Putting in £100 every 20 seconds is a quick way to get poor (or poorer, as most of these are located in low income areas).

I enjoy a punt on an occasional basis and (like most people) lose a healthy amount of what I stake. The US needs to take note of the UK market where extensive advertising and easy to use phone apps make gambling attractive and very easy to access. It has become a big social problem.

I think most folks in the US are aware that gambling can create a lot of social problems. That's in large part why so many states have banned most gambling for many decades.

I'm sure we'll be hearing many loud voices from all sides of the gambling debate in the coming years.

The voice that will likely be the winner is the one that spends the most on lobbying and campaign contributions. :)

Social problems my ass. It’s been banned so that the govt run lotto is the only gambling allowed. It’s okay when it’s the govt. fleecing the poor.
