OT - Kansas City dive BBQ

I hate to add to the stack of threads already asking about where to eat in Kansas City but I'm headed there for the weekend.  Any good dive or roadside BBQ recommendations?

Are you going through Des Moines? If you are looking for some BBQ it's worth the stop at Smokey D's. I found that place to be better than most of the bigger names of Q in KC. If you are a bbq sauce guy it's worth stopping in a grocery store and picking up some different types of sauce we can't get up here in KC. Blues Hog, Sticky Pig, etc. I thought the Q39 bbq sauce was the best part of the meal when eating there. Worth picking up a couple bottles to take home.

That's a good thought!  We are headed through there.  Thanks!

  • I don't know if there are any "roadside" places here in KC but when I hear dive I think BB's Lawnside and SLAPs.

BB's is in a pretty industrial area and has live music a lot of the time. SLAPs is supposed to be great; pretty small, open till they sell out type of place.
  • Do you know where at in KC will you be?

KC Joe's in the gas station had competition worthy ribs.  Heard really good things about Q39.

Don't bother with Gates's or Arthur Bryant's unless it's one of those "say that you've been there trips".  Jack Stack's was good, but not worth the price of admission.....very expensive.

+1 for Slaps in KC, Kansas (ribs are ridiculous)
+1 for BB's Lawnside in Southern KC area (blues bar, they do a BBQ parfait)

Also: Brobeck's in Overland Park/Leawood area - sauce agnostic joint
Also: LC's on 350 in Southern KC area  - talk about divey ! Next to a repo lot and the grill is chained to the telephone pole! Great spicy green beans and true burnt ends.

    Known/Popular/Mainstream KC BBQ:
    • Joe's KC (formerly Oklahoma Joes)
    • Jack's Stack
    • Q39
    • Char Bar
    • Gates
    • Arthur Bryant's

2 Large BGE's, Instant Pot, Anova Sous Vide, and a gas smoker...
    Barbeque, Homebrew and Blues...

How is Brobeck's? I just heard about this place a couple of weeks ago. It's not far from home so if it is good, might have to make a stop.

    Arthur Bryant’s is atrocious

  • Thanks everyone.  Now to decide!  I might need more time in town to try these different places.

I like it!  I've had several sides of their ribs and they're like what I would do (pre-BGE)  - - simply smoked.  They don't have a sauce, but if you want Sweet Baby Rays, Gates, OK Joes or that yellow stuff - it was over there on the table.  Not a bad lunch!

  • We're staying in Overland Park.  We're willing to travel.  Went to Jack Stack's last night.  It was a bit spendy but good.

Have yet to decide on today's stop.

  • All of the above are good, but most aren't really divey.  I always recommend going to the original gates or the original arthur bryants.  They are legitimate BBQ pilgrimages.

Have yet to decide on today's stop.

Check out the KC BBQ Store if you're in Overland Park.  It's just down the street.  KC Joe's is just across the parking lot, but the original one is just north of you in an old gas station.  Hit that or Q39.

One other place to try, Pigwich.  It's a food truck that sits next to a butcher shop (The Local Pig).  It's down in the industrial area by the casino.  Don't get turned off by the surroundings, it gets better when you get there.  No cell coverage though.  2618 Guinotte Ave, Kansas City, MO 64120

Oh hell yes. Pigwich is a great lunch spot. Decent butcher shop, too. Even if you don't buy anything else, get some of their bone marrow butter. SO GOOD

When we were in KC last time we couldn't get a table at any of the good places. Joe's KC had a line wrapped around the building. We were traveling through and didn't have time to wait for hours, so we wound up at Applebee's. They crushed a rack of baby backs. I guess when you're in the center of the BBQ universe, everyone's game is elevated.

I definitely need to come back as I'm not going to hit up all the places i'd like!

Tonight I gave my friends the choice between Q39 & Joe's.  They picked Joe's (the gas station).  Easily the best BBQ meal I can recall.  I'm afraid my partners in crime will want to go back tomorrow.  I couldn't complain too much if it happens but I'd like to explore one more place before we leave.

Joe's is so good even the Weinermobile comes here to eat!

It might really have to be a dive place tomorrow to save money if one of us buys a car that none of us need at the auction. :)
