Lump Charcoal in Hong Kong

Hello All,

I recently relocated to Hong Kong and was forced to downsize my LG egg for the Mini Max, all things considered I was over the moon when it arrived in one piece!  Talk about grilling with a view : ).  The problem now is finding lump charcoal... I've been able to locate some interesting varieties (all online) as stores i've been to only carry crappy briquettes.  Online options are below:

Beech lump:  http://www.renaud.hk/product-p/lg_c-4-pack.htm

Mangrove lump: http://www.hktdc.com/suppliers-products/Hard-Wood-Charcoal-BBQ-Hard-Wood-Charcoal-Mangrove-charcoal/en/1X09QBEP/3199538/

I'm dying to break the egg in -- already located great fish markets and Australian Waygu now just need the fuel to start cooking.  Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.

i have no firsthand knowledge of those brands, but I would review the naked whiz’s charcoal database, which is pretty expansive and includes reviews.

No idea if this will help with international brands, but it’s where I’d start.  Good luck.

I really like the mangrove specs page. The carbon content is quite good. It might be harder to light as a result, and burn hotter w. the same air flow than lump w. somewhat lower carbon content.

We shipped some to Hong Kong last year......not sure what it ended up costing the guy, we just shipped two pallets to Long Beach and he took it from there.

Beech tree charcoal is awful.  Steer clear of that stuff.

May not have cost them anything - a LOT of empty containers head back to China from Long Beach each week. Probably just hitched a ride in one.

  • You can use briquettes with no problems until you find a good lump. They are not crappy and certainly not deserving of the rep they get on here from us lump snobs. I would use decent briques over a crappy lump any day (and there are many) I’m sure you will find something good so keep your eyes and ears open.

I agree, but still falls back to finding decent briquettes. Crappy quality briquettes are far worse than crappy lump in my opinion.

Just curious how did you end up in Hong Kong?
  • Thanks all for the quick responses, greatly appreciated.  I was fortunate to find rockwood lump from another expat thats working out great.

@stlcharcoal - I actually found the gentleman who you shipped the charcoal to on another forum and have 40 lbs on my porch.  Great stuff and a complete live saver.

  • Hey, I am also searching for lump charcoal. I had to carry 5 kilos of it in my suitcase back from Thailand. Can you assist in helping me find some?

I have found this brand when traveling abroad in Europe and in Asia. Although expensive,  you get fist sized chunks, easy lighting, long lasting burn, neutral and burned hot  but for the relatively few nights on the grill, it did an excellent job. Hoping to help.
There were several other brands in Asia, that were not as good. If you can find this, you should be ok.
