Making my own Lumps
Shortly after getting my egg I researched on how to make my own lump coal. Found several u-tube videos and sites posted and decided since I had or could get the resources needed I'd give it a try.
The nakedwhiz site has an article on it. I don't do it like that because I'd have to stand by and feed it firing wood.
I just put the inner barrel upside down inside the burn barrel once it's packed with the wood I'm charring. Then I pack scrape wood around the inter barrel to the top. Now I put the lid on top with my stove pipe once I have that wood burning and come back the next day or so and see what I've cooked.
Making mine out of red and white oak and it's been doing great. Sometimes it does smoke a bit when I first lite the egg up but stops mostly by the time I reach and set my temp I'm shooting for. I still find myself adding uncharred chunks to get smoke. Mostly using peach for that right now because I had some limbs down and dried.
Just curious if others are doing anything like this.
One warning. This will only work if it's a mid 90's day and the humidity is as high as it can get.Comments

That is very cool. Where are you getting your wood?Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

when do you throw in the obligatory hands full of rocks?

I have never done it. It looks simple enough, however I have zero access to free wood and no truck to haul it if I did.Columbus, Ohio--A Gasser filled with Matchlight and an Ugly Drum.

Last Oct/Nov at a saw mill near Lineville, Alabama. Slabs - big ones.
They were cutting hardwoods for crossties and they didn't have their chipper up and running. Don't know if he's still giving them away or has his chipper going. Mostly what I got was oak .
Got enough to fill my woodshed plus some. 9 loads on a 12 foot dump. Some cut there and some whole slabs.
Still have a couple of loads in the back yard is what made me look at doing it. It's easy and good hard exercise but you got to live where you can do it. Right now I'm under a no burn rule.

Thanks for the cool story and pictures! Wonder why they would have been destroying those size pieces without trying to sell them to stick burner folks or lump companies.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

I like it! Really cool thanks for sharing!“There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body.”

@kl8ton, Sorry, no sale. 63 Chevy 1/2 ton but needs a lot of work. Plan to be a retirement project in a couple more years. Have a 51 GMC 1/2 ton in that building too. Both are just projects at this point in my life.

No access to the resources to do anything like this myself; but, very cool story. Thanks for sharing and good luck!Low Country EggHead

So I get up this morning at 5:30 to build a wood shelter. I was pretty pleased with my setup. I was thinking to myself "I wonder how many other people have a wood shelter in the city".
Then I come in and see this post. The scale you are operating makes it look like I'm just playing.
Way to go, making your own lump, and I'm envious of your set up (including the classic Chevys). Thanks for posting.
