I am thinking about making some pan fried potatoes on the egg. Is there a problem putting a cast iron skillet on top of the cooking grid? Will it scratch and take the finish off the grid?

Arvadaman,[p]I wouldn't worry about it. If the bottom of the Cast Iron piece resembles a saw blade, maybe slap a layer of foil around the bottom of the skillet.

Arvadaman,
I lost my porcelain coating years ago so using the cast iron doesn't hurt me - but yes you do run the risk if it becomes too hot.

Arvadaman,
it is ok to put a cast iron skillet on the egg, some cook their steak, cornbread, baked beans, etc. with this method. just be careful not to spill any hot grease into the fire!!!

CT Grillguy,
Ditto.Get yourself a vegetable grid, and you can do twice as much food content than you would in a pan. Also a heck of a lot easier to stirr and toss than a skillet.

Here is some salmon patties. I have also blackened catfish.

Arvadaman,
What size dutch oven did you get? The old hardware store has a few in town that I've had my eye on....
-
Eggineer,[p]I have a couple of dutch ovens but I was considering a
skillet. Probably 10.5 inches without a handle. I have
a small egg so I can't go any larger than that.

Arvadaman,
If you use your Egg regularly (or any other grill for that matter) that finish is coming off anyway. Use the skillet and enjoy it to the Max.

Arvadaman,
here is a link to a great cast iron skillet potato recipe for the egg. ....you won't hurt anything by using cast iron in the egg. .i use mine all the time for all kinds of things ... will take nuclear temps with no problem (except that you might have re-season the cast iron afterwards . .

ronbeaux,[p]Man, that's a beast! Very cool that it can either be used to sear or used as a heat deflector for indirect cooks. [p]john
