Embarrassed but… can't keep my lid from almost slamming shut on me

Just cannot crack the band code for keeping my lid on the large wide open and safe from slamming shut on me.

Where do I tighten?  Is it the bolts attached to the springs?  Common sense seems to not be working.  Then again, I am carb deprived and that may have something to do with it.

Thanks-

Stupid question but I'm gonna ask. Are you sure the egg is level?

Yes-  it is in its nest.  However I have had this problem before.  Seems to happen after a hot cook and then I twist and turns stuff, fighting  it and end up just using the small.

Another question - are you sure your band wasn't installed up side down? Seriously - that would mean the springs are assisting slamming it shut.

+1 on the upside down installation being the culprit.

OK, im just going to ask....If the bands were flipped, would this not still aid in opening the lid? Upside down, or right side up, if they could ba assembled that way, the spring is the spring, and aids in prying open the two bands? No?

Ref. the pic. The two nuts pointed out by the arrows need to be tightened. Don't tighten the outer nuts or your springs won't be able to swivel.

Also, look at the two pics, make sure your springs are on in that direction.

    things to check

    upside down bands
bottom spring bolts tight and perpendicular.
get a level and check that the egg isnt slightly tipping forward, it doesnt take much
check the actual spring, mine cracked at the tighter 90 degree bend
if the egg is 12 years old it could have a mexican band that was prone to fail
(the handle on the mexican band is welded, not bolted)

  • Agree with little Steven and take the white plastic piece off. We are a dealer and the new eggs are coming with plastic shims to get the bands spaced properly but that doesn't seem to be your problem. Is the top and bottom band in alignment?

I thought that the plastic was the one with the two holes to keep the bands from flying open during assembly. It looks to me like they are in place and resisting opening. If he has been using the egg with them on, the holes in the spacer will have worn open a bit but still prevent full opening.

See the bolt in the highlighted area of this pic? That's the problem.......that bolt needs to be snugged up to the flange. It's obviously not. If he would tighten that nut I told him about earlier that would fix this. That plastic tie cord doesn't look like it's doing anything, good or bad!

Good catch Hawkeye! Oh to have youthful eyes again like yours :D I still think he has the band locking thing on.

  • Looks like the band lock is in a storage position to me. The loose bolt could be the culprit !

  • I don't think that's the band lock, but rather the plastic spray bottle in the background.

That's what I think too. Hard to see what, if anything, that tie wrap is wrapped around, but I vote for it rather than the loose bolt. My bolts were like that when I got the egg 4 years ago. They are still like that.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

@egret - your suggestion worked like a charm.  I tightened the bolt to the flange as instructed and the default settings have been restored.  Unfortunately, it came from the dealer that way and I have wrestled with it ever since.

I cannot say enough fantastic things about the great people of this forum!  I have learned so much, become a better cook, and enjoyed the eggsperiences along the way.

With that being said, the I prefer to let tie-wraps just "happen" like compost.  It fell off organically like a toe nail when I tightened the other bolts.

Glad it worked ok. I'm surprised you had that problem since assembly of this band system doesn't require anything that would change the factory torque or setting on those nuts. I wouldn't be too quick to blame the dealer on this one.......
Steven, would you settle for 60-40?
