How do you lift your butts?
tmEGGer
Posts: 92
I smoked 5 pork butts (over 40# of meat) on my large BGE. The butts sat on the main grid above an inverted platesetter and on a grid extender (3 on bottom, 2 on top). I had some difficulty removing the butts, since when fully cooked they tend to fall apart and the nice, crisp, sticky bark gets stuck to the grids.[p]I used an extra wide spatula, but it was bending under the weight of each butt (8-9#). [p]Any suggestions on what works well?[p]Thanks.

NutmEGGer,
I use those oversized-lookingwire forks made for turkeys - they are about 6" wide and bent to form a handle and come in pairs - work fine for me!

NutmEGGer,
I use a big stiff spatula and a big fork - but it still takes the correct technique!! Sometimes I need a helper too!!![p]mule

Bear Claws is the only way to go Pal.

These claws are just as good for lifting as they are for pulling.
Works great for me.

NutmEGGer,
I use heavy duty rubber gloves, you can work your fingers under the roasts and pick up the lions share of them. The remaining sticking parts are then picked off the grill and popped into the mouth of the cook and priveleged friends. -RP

NutmEGGer,
Orca mits work great - that's what I use. Any small smackrels stuck on the grid gets eaten before the meat makes it into the house... but that's my little secret. Joe

Most of the time now I put on some thin cotton gloves and a pair of food service gloves over that. Protects hands from heat and when finished I just toss the throwaway ones. I do the same thing when pulling pork.

NutmEGGer, I use a fish spatula and one heavy duty rubber glove. If not using the grid extender, I would try a metal pizza peel.

jake42,[p]Where do I get this type of device? Pulling pork can be tedious, especially at 1:00 am after an extra long smoke. Do they really work that well for pulling?[p]TM

NutmEGGer,
you can get a tool at home depot in the drywalling tols that looks like a metal pizza peel, and use it like a very big spatula. that and a glove

NutmEGGer,
...but that's when I do only one.[p]learned my lesson the hard way, when i forgot to once and it fell apart all over the grid....
