Nope, a 16" stone will fit perfectly...

Some people will say yes, but I use a 16" round baking steel on my large and it works fine. You just aren't going to get it very far up the dome if you're playing around with the best placement. If you haven't bought one yet, I'd get a 14-15".

16 " should be fine the grill on a large is 18 1/4" so it should work fine2 Large Eggs and a Mini 2 Pit Bulls and a Pork shoulder or butt nearby and 100% SICILIANLong Island N.Y.

will enough heat be able to get around it to cook the top of the pizza?

No problem with a 16" stone. I use my 16" Old Stone 4461 over my 15" BGE stone. Naked Whiz prefers his 16" stone as well. You're good to go"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan
